About taste belize

Here at Taste Belize we are the food and culture experts! From fine dark chocolate to home made corn tortillas or a simple plate of coconut rice and beans, we love sharing our diverse culinary heritage with everyone who visits Belize.

Taste Belize founder Lyra Spang grew up on an off grid organic cacao farm in the jungles of southern Belize. Her family’s passion for good food and organic farming and her childhood eating dishes from many different cultures inspired her to pursue a doctorate in the anthropology of food. As she conducted research on tourism and culinary development in Placencia Village, she realized that there were no tour operators offering culinary tours. And so, in the summer of 2014, with one passionate guide and a second hand minivan, Taste Belize Tours was born. Eleven years later, we continue to offer unique food and culture focused tours and classes for visitors looking for a different vacation experience.

Specific recommendations are listed in our tour and class descriptions. We always recommend bringing your own reusable water bottle, some cash in case you wish to make a last minute purchase, (many small shops, artisans and roadside stands in Belize are still cash only), and your phone or camera to take photos or video. Wear comfortable clothes and bring your favorite insect repellent if you are susceptible to bug bites, especially for tours that go into the jungle. See each tour or class for details.

Taste Belize Cancellations/Rescheduling: We rarely cancel a tour or class unless inclement weather makes it impossible (due to flooded roads, etc) or dangerous (due to extremely rough seas, etc) to our guests safety to proceed. In those cases, we always try our best to reschedule the activity at a safer time. If we do have to cancel a tour or class for any reason, you will receive a full refund.

Tipping is welcome but not required. While on tour you will have a guide with you for the entire day as well as activity providers along the way that make our culinary and cultural experiences happen. For classes, you will have an independent instructor guiding you. Particularly where a service provider or guide is working for someone else, (such as the farm guides at the Belize Spice Farm and Cheil Chocolate farm), tips are an appreciated addition to their daily wage.
