Tour Description

Join Kim and Bobby Nunez in the beach side Garifuna community of Seine Bight and cook classic Garifuna dishes utilizing fresh caught fish and coconut right from Placencia Peninsula. We cook over an outdoor, wood burning fire hearth right in their yard. Husk and grate a coconut from the tree to make coconut milk from scratch. Let Kim guide you through the process of concocting hudut, an iconic and delectable Garifuna dish featuring a rich coconut broth, crispy fried fish and mashed plantain. Served, of course, with home made habanero hot sauce. If you rather just watch the culinary magic, relax in the shade with a fresh cut coconut water while our expert instructors do the rest. Alcoholic beverages are not included but you are welcome to bring your own! NOTE: This class is gluten free and can accommodate vegetarian and vegan upon request.

Our Garifuna Cooking Class was amazing! Kim and Bobby were great interpreters of Garifuna culture and generous hosts. We learned traditional methods of Garifuna cooking (grating and squeezing coconut, mashing plantains) and then enjoyed the delicious end product (hudut). It was very interactive and tons of fun. Highly recommend!!

Our Belize cooking lesson in Placencia was one of the highlights of the trip. We learned to make hudut—perfectly ripe plantains paired with fresh red snapper in a rich coconut broth infused with herbs—and every step felt authentic and hands-on.

Kim and Bobby were wonderful hosts and teachers. They cooked over an open wood fire with such ease, showing us techniques that felt both traditional and deeply personal. We watched (and helped!) as they split and hand-shredded coconuts, transforming them into fresh coconut milk right before our eyes. The plantains were incredibly fresh, and using a mortar and pestle to mash and prepare ingredients added to the experience.

The fresh-picked herbs brought everything together, and the final dish was comforting, flavorful, and unlike anything we’ve had before. Kim and Bobby’s warmth, skill, and passion made this far more than a cooking lesson—it was a true taste of Belizean culture.
